Cassandra grins and lays a hand on the table. "Makes two of us. Anne
already knows, but you took off b'fore I got a chance to tell you."
Jeremy ahs softly, furrowing his brow. "Yeah, okay."
Cassandra grins and leans forward, leaning both elbows on the table. "I
asked somebody to meet me here tonight so you could meet the person
who puts up with my shit most of the time." She raises her voice for
the last part so that Andrea can hear her.
Andrea is drinking out of her mug. A smile crinkles her eyes, though she
doesn't look over right away.
Pack> Andrea says "That my cue, love? And should I play mudane, or does
he know?"
Jeremy nods a little, again still a little out of his depth. "Who?"
Pack> Cassandra says "Play mundane for now? He's gotten one good scare
already today."
Pack> Andrea mmnnss. "Won't lie, then, but I won't bring it up. How's
that?"
Pack> Cassandra says "Works for me."
Cassandra simply says, "She's coming. Andrea?" She looks over to the
bar.
Cassandra looked at you...
Andrea lowers the cup and glances over her shoulder. Indicating to the
man behind the counter where she's moving, the theurge slides off the
stool to the ground. She takes her coffee with her as she moves to
join the couple. Her expression isn't effusively friendly, but it
seems open and relaxed enough, with a smile lingering in the corners
of her lips.
Andrea(#1358Pc$)
Thick black hair is braided loosely out of this woman's face, with wisps
of curly bangs above the twin slashes of dark brown eyebrows. Andrea
is dressed in new clothing that looks warm: a dark blue flannel shirt,
blue jeans, and short tan moccasins. Around her waist is a leather
belt, with a brightly-colored woven bag hanging from the left side.
She wears a diamond stud in her right ear, and a gold chain bracelet
with a heart locket on her right wrist. On her right hand is a carved
wooden ring. Looking to be in her late twenties, Andrea stands at
about 5'3"; her build is slender but well-muscled. Two shadow-black
eyes look back at you from under thick dark brown lashes, distant and
serene. Her skin is a creamy tan.
Jeremy vaguely, evidently apparently trying to be friendly and
accomadating, though he doesn't quite pull it off. His general
demeanor has the lingerings of that angery young man facade he carries
himself with, though recent news has done a decent job of stripping.
"Hi."
Cassandra chuckles and scooches over so Andrea can join their table.
"Yo. Thanks fer coming. "Jeremy, this is Andrea, probably the most
patient woman I know. Andrea, Jeremy's the guy I was tellin y'about."
This man isn't very tall, just topping off at about average height for a
male. His build is rather athletic, looking muscular, strong and
solid. His features are rough hewn, attractive in a rugged way, but
not incredibly so. His eyes are a deep brown color, nothing notable
though. He seems to squint as he watches his surroundings, both of
which he does often. His hair is black, but cropped very close to his
head, jsut long enough to be able to part. While probably only in his
mid twenties, he carries himself in a way that makes him look a bit
older before his time. He wears a pair of jeans, and a collarless
button down shirt, over which is thrown a rather bland looking
motorcycle jacket.
Andrea sets down her coffee on the table so she can offer her right
hand. The skin is rougher than he might expect, though more from
callusus than unscrupulous grooming. "Pleased to meet you, Jeremy."
Jeremy extends his hand to takes her's and shake it. He seems to settle
into things a little better, scruntinizing her face, her manner, her
dress, seemingly taking in details and looking for something both at
the same time. He gives a small, shallow nod, gesture more hesitant
than clipped. "Good to meet you as well, Andrea. Cass hasn't told me
much about her friends, really. S'good to finally meet one."
Andrea ruffles the younger woman's hair as she makes herself comfortable
at the table. "Figures." She then turns back to Jeremy before the
momentary revealing of the closeness between the two women goes on
long enough to make most boyfriends uncomfortable.
Cassandra just grins in the impish manner of one who is caught out and
not the least bit ashamed of it. "Now, before the man has a heart
attack and dies on the floor, I want a Coke. Can we smoke in here?"
Jeremy seems in fact to be growing more steady with each passing moment.
It seems he's settling into some sort of role, though it's tough to
say what that is, exactly. He nods a little, subdued, as he watchs the
two women. It's a sort of casual observation that doesn't seem like
it's particularly focused, but the truly perceptive might notice it
is. "Yeah well, as I understand it, she's got a lot she really can't
talk about." He chuckles darkly,"No heart attack yet, I think that
stage has passed." He flags a waiter over to take orders.
Andrea glances around at the tables. "I think we're in the smoking
session." The waiter, when he comes up for the order and with Andrea's
sandwich, confirms and offers to bring an ash tray.
"Do either of you mind?" Cassandra glances t Andrea, but longest on
Jeremy. "An y'look like you could use one, Jer. Don't smoke the
nicotine ones, though." She pulls out a small box and a lighter from
somewhere on her person, nodding to the waiter.
Andrea shakes her head, though she doesn't ask for one herself. She then
says to Jeremy, "It can be hard, to accept when someone can't say
thing. I'm glad too, to meet you."
Jeremy takes the cig unthinkingly and then inclines his head towards
Cassie. "You really think you oughta be smoking those right now? I
mean, maybe hold off until after the kid's born?" He glances back to
Andrea, and nods faintly.
Cassandra tosses her head back in a peal of laughter, and obediently
tucks the box away without a murmur. "I -knew- you were gonna do that.
I -knew- it." She seems immensely pleased with herself, grinning
widely. "All right, I'll hold off."
Andrea gives Cassandra an amused glance and begins eating her food. It
seems to be some sort of meat salad on a dark toasted bread. Maybe
deviled ham.
Pack> Cassandra says "You might get the mental impression that Cassandra
asked less because she wanted one than because she wanted to play with
Jeremy's mind."
Jeremy looks slightly confused for a moment, and scratchs the back of
his head. He eyes his cigarette, and then puts it on the table, once
again looking vaguely out of his depth. "Well, um. I mean, it makes
sense and all. I guess I'm going to have to beg off while I'm around
ya too. Or something."
Cassandra shakes her head quickly. "Look, 'f you want one, go 'head. I
can run around the woods screaming and picking on my friends if I
gotta."
Jeremy nods a little. "Well yeah, but it's probably not good for the
kid." He shakes his head a little.
Cassandra shoots a look at Andrea, grinning wickedly. "I gotta go
find..." Her smile fades a bit as she glances over at Jeremy, then
returns, but more reserved than it was. "Yeah. I know. Went through
hell while you were gone, so dun see how I can make things worse with
-that-.
Jeremy nods a little, his expression tightening vaguely.
Andrea looks from Cassandra to Jeremy. She then asks, with a gentle
voice to make up for the relative bluntness of her words, "Do you know
how involved you wish to be with this child, Jeremy, or is that still
in the deciding?"
Jeremy says simply,"I don't know. I mean, I was just told tonight. It's
my kid, so I have a responsibility to him, her ... the child. But ...
I can't give up being a cop."
Andrea smiles faintly, "None of us can give up what we are." She looks
again at her packmate, though her words are to Jeremy. "I won't press
you tonight, certainly. I haven't even pressed Cassandra on what she
plans to do. But you have to forgive her friends if we worry about
her."
Pack> Touch Deer says "IC: Anyone awake?"
Pack> Cassandra says "Yo."
Pack> Andrea says "Hello."
Pack> Touch Deer says "Hey you two. Where are you tonight? I just woke
up.."
Cassandra mutters softly, "Assuming I don't get into any more shit like
the last one..." almost to herself.
Jeremy eyes Cassandra a moment, and then nods simply to Andrea's words
though his expression flashs troubled fro a moment. "I wouldn't expect
any less."
Pack> Cassandra says "City, Touch Deer. My boyfriend decided to put in
an appearance in St. Claire."
Pack> Touch Deer says "Hm? I should meet him someday. Does he know about
us?"
Pack> Cassandra says "Yeah, kinda. He knows 'bout me, anyway, an' he's
scared shitless."
Andrea frowns, then says lightly, "Well, we'll try to keep you out of
trouble, anyway."
Pack> Touch Deer says "*chuckles* I would be too..."
Pack> Cassandra tries -so- hard to sound innocent. "Of me? But -why-?"
Pack> Touch Deer says "*pause* I'd rather keep myself in one piece."
Cassandra's eyes unfocus for a moment, but she comes back with a wicked
grin on her face which she fixes on Jeremy. "Don't worry, the brat
responsible got it worse than I did and I don't got no plans on doin'
anything stupid for a while."
Jeremy smiles faintly. "I'd ask, but I have a feeling you can't tell me
here."
Andrea moves her mouth like someone tasting something unpleasant and
picks up her coffee to take another sip.
Cassandra allows the smile to fade into a smirk. "Good guess. I'll tell
ya later, though. What?" She glances at Andrea, curiously.
Andrea raises her brows, then says, "Just remembering that dawn." She
turns to Jeremy and says, "Are you an officer with the force here?"
Jeremy nods first to Cassandra and then to Andrea. "Yeah, I'm a
detective in homocide."
The younger woman chuckles, though the sound approximates Andrea's
earlier expression. "Oh. That. Yeah, I never quite knew just whatcha
did."
Andrea glances beside her at Cassandra. Her smile turns rueful. "Just
taking care of you, if a little belated." She then returns her
attention to Jeremy, saying, "You see things too, then."
Jeremy laughs darkly. "Yeah, I do. This city ... it's not as bad as it
was this spring. I saw some pretty fucked up stuff. "
Cassandra shrugs a shoulder at Andrea, although she doesn't say
anything, seemingly content to listen.
Pack> Cassandra muttersd over the link, "Well, you had more important
things to do."
Pack> Touch Deer says "...Hm?"
Andrea's mouth tightens, incongruously, at Cassandra. She smooths the
expression somewhat as she turns to nod to Jeremy seriously, saying,
"I know what you mean."
Pack> Cassandra says ""Was talkin' t'Andrea."
Jeremy inclines his head a little. "So I've heard. It'd be nice if you
all could do something about the shit that goes on here, but I guess
there are something athat are beyond anyone's control." He shrugs, his
words not quite sounding like a reproach, but hint at it.
Jeremy lets out a long breath, lifting a shoulder. "I suppose. Yeah.
Seen a lot of shit I prefer I hadn't." He glances vaguely at
Andrea,"It'd be nice if you all could help do something about that
here in the city. Instead of just sticking to whatever is so important
out there in the woods." The words aren't quite a reproach.
Andrea's dark eyes study the kinfolk, but she doesn't react with anger.
She does, however, respond. "Some of us do. But we have districts,
just like you do. Sometimes we step out of them, but most of the time,
we have to abide by them."
Cassandra leans forward, adding, "I know the folks who run this join
city-wise, or some of 'em anyway. I can put 'em in touch with you if
y'feel like you c'n handle it."
Jeremy looks vaguely frustrated, and shakes his head. "That isn't my
point. I can I can't understand whats out in those woods that so damn
more important than the people that suffer and die in this city
everyday."
Cassandra cocks an eye at Jeremy, not quite angry. "You think we just
sit on our asses out there?" She sighs. "Andrea, I'm gonna let you
decide how much t'tell him on this one."
Andrea picks up her spoon and idly swirls her cooling coffee. She then
looks back at Jeremy and says honestly, "We see so much death and pain
everyday, Jeremy, that sometimes we don't think of the city as worse.
But the evil is in the woods too, even if you can't see it here. It's
like a cancer. And it does you no good to save one part of your body
from tumors, if you let the rest of you die."
Jeremy sits back in his chair, eyeing the two women, but not looking
entirely convinced.
Cassandra sighs, looking longingly at the lighter she never bothered to
put down. "Count yerself lucky, Jer, in a way. You see shit on the
street. I seen the streets. I was the shit on the streets. I seen shit
that makes the East L.A. ghetto look like a picnic."
Jeremy shakes his head a little. "After what I saw this spring ... I
just don't buy it. Hell, I know at least one of those killings /had/
to be associated with the shit you deal with."
Andrea exchanges a look with Cassandra. She then says, "I could show you
something of it. Both the evil you can't see, and the strength in the
woods we have to defend. But I don't know if you're ready to see it."
Pack> Andrea offers through the link to show him the Umbra, if you want
him convinced.
Pack> Cassandra considers, then sends assent. Can you do that? she asks
curiously?
Pack> Andrea can. "It's something I wouldn't do lightly, especially for
someone other than a Kinfolk, but I imagine it'll be effective in
showing him, and it's half-moon. We should be able to keep him alive
for long enough to show him the shit here before we step back."
Pack> Cassandra says "Just make sure he don't get no bullshit ideas
about protectin' me and yeah."
Cassandra looks back at Andrea, curiously, giving the impression of some
sort of wordless exchange going on, flicking only one unfocused glance
at Jeremy.
Jeremy raises an eyebrow curiously.
Andrea turns back from Cassandra and explains further. "I'm able to take
you to the underneath. It's not common, but it's something some of us
can do. If you want to see just a little of what we fight, and you can
trust us, I can take you." Her voice turns serious. "But these are the
things that go bump in the night. Even Cassandra and I wouldn't try to
go all the way home in the underneath from the city. If you pull away
from us, or don't do exactly what we say, or try to step between
Cassandra and danger, it could kill you."
Jeremy narrows his eyes slightly. "How is proving to me there's bad shit
in the city prove your point?"
Andrea looks back at Jeremy evenly. "It might show you that there's
worse things than people that kill with guns and knives."
Cassandra shoots a look at Andrea. "I'd be half-tempted to show him the
hospital, but that's way too dangerous."
Jeremy replies,"Oh, I'm fully aware of that. Like I said, I've seen some
of those 'worse things' handiwork. Or I'm fairly sure I have in some
cases. My point isn't that there's nasty shit that shouldn't be by
human reckoning in the city, Andrea. My point is there /is/ nasty shit
that shouldn't be by human reckoning in the city. And me, a cop, thats
supposed to protect people is feeling pretty shitty about the fact it
feels like there's jack I can do about it. And maybe that there are
people that can, but aren't."
Cassandra slams both hands down on the table, "Then what do you want to
see? We're -trying-, even if you -can't- see it. Maybe you should see
that there's other approaches."
Pack> Cassandra says "If we really wanted to drive it home, we oughta
take 'im to the hospital. But that's just way too fuckin' dangerous."
Pack> Touch Deer's voice floats over the link, "Hey..."
Jeremy tenses his jaw, his body taking on a sudden tension as Cassandra
smacks the table. The unease settles in his posture a he uncrosses his
arms. "Maybe."
Cassandra says "What we're trying to say is that them people in thecity
'r jus' the -symptoms- of a -bigger- problem. Mebbe we're tryin' to
hit the -source-."
Andrea turns to give Cassandra a rueful look before turning back to
Jeremy. She sounds confindent as she challenges what he says, though
her voice is much calmer than Cassandra. She raises a calming hand to
Cassandra's shoulder. "You might have seen something. But if it was on
the human side, then I can promise you you only saw the tip of the
iceberg. If Cassandra hasn't told you, Jeremy, we're losing this war.
Some of us would rather write the city off as lost entirely, because
the cities are where the evil florishes. Or burn them to the ground,
and damn those that live there. Part of it is what Cassandra says,
about the source. And part of it is that the woods is our side of the
metaphysical battle line. It's our turf, and we can survive most battles
there. If we threw every one of ourselves that's in this city at the
heart of its worst places, it would eat us up and ask for more."
Jeremy looks dubious and tenser still. "This source is out in the woods,
huh?" He quiets, chewing on his lower lip. It seems some of what
Andrea's said though is starting to take root, and that he's buying
into it. "I suppose that makes some amount of sense then."
Cassandra glances at Andrea. "You still wanna take 'im? I think it'll
give 'im a closer look at what he's tryin' t'understand."
Cassandra abruptly shoots a look at Jeremy. "An' d'you wanna -go-?"
Jeremy says dryly,"I don't think it's all that neccesary. I don't think
seeing how shitty the city really is is going to change anything."
Pack> Cassandra mutters over the link, "Y'know, mebbe we oughta show him
in the woods first. Mebbe givin' him a clue is hopeless."
Pack> Scab-Survivor says "You two still in the Scab?"
Cassandra shrugs a shoulder. "Fine, then. You feel like chancing a trip
t'the woods? There's gonna be a lotta people 'round. Not tonight, but
mebbe later."
Andrea's expression abruptly changes into a smile, though it doesn't
seem to be at Jeremy's words. She nods, shrugging, saying, "If you
don't need to be convinced of our battles, then that's safer, anyway.
And not to give you a lot of doublespeak, but the source isn't in the
woods. The source is a lot like the Christian devil, everywhere and no
where, except in its version of Hell."
Jeremy lets out a long breath and mutters,"How come that doesn't fucking
surprise me." He then lifts a shoulder to Cassandra. "Sure, I ain't
got work tommorow."
Cassandra stands up, abruptly. "Yeah he does. Like most men, he thinks
that his little corner of the world is more important than everybody
else's. Wanna take him there, Andrea? If he knows what we fight
against, mebbe we oughta show 'm what we fight -for-."
Andrea shakes her head. "I will, but not if he doesn't think it'll prove
anything to him. It's not a power I want to use just to flex my
strength."
That seems to get a rise out of Jeremy finally and he bolts to his feet.
His words come fast and fierce. "Go to hell Cass. You've got the
fucking luxury of waltzing through here when it's convienent. Some of
us have to live here. And if you don't like the fact I give a shit
about this place when no one else seems to, tough shit." He turns to
stalk out.
"Convenient, hell," Cassandra snarls. "My friends live out here, too,
incase you've forgotten. Get out, then, you selfish bastard."
Jeremy doesn't bother responding as he stalks out.
Andrea gives her packmate a look as the waiter comes up uncertainly with
the orders. Pushing the coke that belongs to her across the table, she
says, "Well, that went well."
Cassandra snorts, trembling with anger. "Stupid bastard. Can't see
anything but himself." She sits down, and snarls in a lower voice,
"Humans."
Andrea says gently, "Drink your coke."
Cassandra obeys, still obviously furious, muttering around her straw,
"-Have- to live here my ass. You don't -got- to do nothin' you don't
wanta."
Andrea continues, once the Fury is at least attempting to calm down and
act normal in the eyes of the curious other patrons. She says, "Well,
we did hit him with a lot at once, you know. I just couldn't leave
what he said unchallenged." Her smile flickers over her face,
self-depreciatingly. "Too much like getting told we do a bad job, I
guess."
Cassandra shrugs a shoulder, slurping up half her Coke. "He just don't
get it, I guess. He ain't gonna see what we do, if we do it right,
y'know. Like the hospital an' shit."
Andrea shakes her head. "How could he get it?" She glances around at the
other people in the cafe and adds, more quietly, "Even our youngsters
don't get it, and they know. I think he's trying, Cass, but he's got a
temper." She lets her voice relax to its normal low timbre, chuckling,
"Rather like a woman I know. You could cut him enough slack to let him
adjust."
Cassandra shrugs. "Ain't none so blind as don't wanna see, hon." She
finishes the Coke with a loud slurp and sets it down. "Let's get our
check and blow. I been tryin' to but he's so scared shitless o'
everyone he ain't adjustin'. I wanna go fer a run. I need it."
Andrea nods, pulling a couple of much-abused bills from her pocket. She
pauses, then offers, "You want me to talk to him? I don't have a lot
of issues tied up in his genitals, nor do I have the emotional baggage
you two have with the child. But I won't play damage control if you
want me to leave it alone."
Cassandra shrugs. "Might as well. Less damage done, the less likely all
of this is to get back t'Anne."
Cassandra snorts, grinning evilly. "An' the picture of' tyin' his
genitals in a knot looks damn good right now," she says she as stands.
Andrea laughs despite herself. Making sure the bill is paid, she gets
the information on how to find Jeremy from Cassandra, and then takes
the Fury on the requested run.
Cassandra adds as she walks out, after giving Andrea the requested
information, "An the big thing is not to get Anne mixed up in my
business." She grins.
