Quiet lifts muzzle and howls back acknowledgement. Quiet's scent
precedes her on the warm summer air, then the yellow wolf comes into
the small clearing where Clouded Sky waits.
Clouded Sky had been sitting as she waited, but as Quiet becomes
visible, the Talon rises and then lowers herself before the Child of
Gaia. She turns her head to the side to look up at Quiet. I have come
seeking knowledge and teachings.
Quiet walks toward the younger wolf, tail up in a lazy display of
dominance. Her ears are tilted slightly forward, and her muscles are
relaxed. She circles the other wolf, sniffing, then settles down in
front of her. What do you seek?
Clouded Sky gestures with her chin toward the two artifacts hanging at
her chest. I have been given gifts, yet I know not their purpose. The
spirits of my ancestors have told me that they are bound with spirits,
and I have worn them into the shadows, but I do not know their proper
use, or meaning. Can you help me to find this?
Quiet sniffs at the objects. I can try, though it may take some time.
Sometimes it is easy to tell, and other times it is not. How did you
get these things?
Clouded Sky rubs her chin against her foreleg. The one that is of hide
and gut belonged once to my dam. She prized it greatly. When she died
it was given to Swipes at Salmon, who gave it to me before my Rite of
Passage. She did not know its use. Clouded Sky breathes deeply, an ear
turning back as she remembers those who have passed. The other was a
gift from the odd people who live between worlds. My dam used to call
them ~Fey.~ We performed a task for them, and this they gave us in
return.
Quiet gives another considering noise, her ears flicking in interest as
each object is explained in turn. I may need to speak with Thatcher,
then. I will see what I can determine, but I know something of those
people. I am not certain that even they know what all their objects
do.
Clouded Sky hurrs softly, then sits a little straighter. Is there action
which can be taken, to learn about these things?
Quiet has some gifts at determining spirits, which can help narrow the
path. Study sometimes leads to answers.
Clouded Sky lowers her head once more, ears pulling forward. I would
like to learn to speak with the spirits as my ancestors did. Is this
something you can teach me?
Quiet's head tilts in consideration. I can try, she finally says. Though
spirits in objects are sleeping, and the gift will not help you with
those. If you are a crescent moon, such teaching would come easier,
but you returned from your rite claiming a different moon. I have
never heard that story.
Clouded Sky's ear twitches and then both turn outward, her tail
drooping. The elders at the Sept of my rite said to me before sending
us home that my moon was in question, and was not as Swipes at Salmon
had told me. Others, upon my return, said that the gifts gaia had
given me would not have been given to a Red Talon of the crescent
moon, but only to a Wendigo of the gibbous moon. Both tribes now claim
me, and I would learn as much as I can of the ways of each. I seem to
walk a path between. Of moons I know little. My dam was gibbous moon,
and I know I do not howl as she could. I remember tales I am told, but
they do not sing in my voice. Yet I know so little of the spirit ways.
Perhaps in walking the path between I will understand neither fully.
Quiet says that is wisdom. Though you can know something of two paths
from going between both, you must choose only one to follow it to its
end.
Clouded Sky tilts her head to the side, lifting a forepaw. How can I
know which path to follow? Was Swipes at Salmon correct in what she
saw within me? Or do the gifts Gaia gave to me truly point me down a
different path?
Quiet says you will have to follow what your deepest self says is right.
Though a nea-full can know of spirits, and a crescent can know of
tales--which indeed I do--still their ways are different. You can be
only one. That knowing does not always come easy for those not marked
with the kinfetch. It may be that the spirits that will teach one will
not teach you. And that will tell you, unless your deepest part says
no. Some Garou walk a different path than Luna has set for them. There
is a rite that changes their aspect, so spirits will teach them,
though it costs heavy in the respect of those that knew you in another
moon.
Clouded Sky releases a breath sharply. I do not know that any are
certain of my moon, least of all those who know me best. However, I
will do my best to learn what I can of both ways until I know one
fills my heart more completely than the other.
Quiet will try to see if the spirits will speak with you and teach you
their tongue, if you wish. If it is not your moon it may not work, as
I said, but we can try.
Clouded Sky's mouth opens, displaying her pleasure at the notion. Thank
you Quiet-rhya.
Quiet gently nosebumps the other wolf. You are welcome.
Clouded Sky drops down and begins backing away. I will go, now, to watch
over the wolves. I will return to learn what you will teach me.
Quiet gives a pleased chuff. I must return to the island as well. Mother
watch over you, Clouded Sky. Whatever path you walk.
Clouded Sky huffs with pleasure and turns to trot homeward.
