QUESTIONS AS YET UNANSWERED
The New Gods
  • Did all of the New Gods enter the material realm during the Forsaking? Which still remain? Which have departed the Material, and to where? Which have died?
According to answer during a communion with Air, all of the Nineteen passed through the portal; no divinities of their world remained behind. According to the High Priest of Fire, several of them have since died, including:
    • Fharlanghn
    • Moradin
    • Gnarl Glittergold
    • Kord
    • Boccob
    • Oldimara
    • Nerull
There have been rumors of others, still active:
    • Heironeous and Hextor are said to be battling each other, though I do not know which is winning
    • Obad-Hai I believe we encountered in the wilds of the northern mountains, where he seemed to want to simply be left alone...by everyone.
    • Ehlonna we know to have been active near Cleven - we encountered her in the process of being ensnared by (and then untangling) her possession scheme there.
    • Cuthbert approached us in Cleven and offered us a great deal of information. Unfortunately, he didn't share the locations of any of the others.
  • Was the conflict between the followers of the New Gods and the Old a matter of mortal pride, or did the New Gods drive/approve/demand it?
The Nineteen wished broad acceptance by the whole of this world; to that end, displacing the existing churches would have been in their interest. It seems almost certain they had no desire to coexist.
The Elemental Gods
The Outer Planes
  • Who opened the portal from the lower to upper planes? Was it intentional or a side-effect of something else?
Apparently, neither. Or rather, it seems to have been intential but incidental to the purpose at hand. We had supposed that the disappearance of the Gate to the realm of Fire was connected with the appearance of the gate between the lower planes (Carceri?) and Celestia, and that perhaps the first had been used in some fashion to create the second. We were right about a connection existing, but we seem to have been mistaken as to the order of events. Solentas now tells us that the gate to Fire was not destroyed, but rather was moved - relocated to a different end-point on the Material. The gate to Celestia was not the result of that movement, but rather the cause. Someone (Solentas believes) has take steps to strengthen the line of power between Carceri and Celestia (opening a Gate in the process, perhaps when the strength of the line crossed some critical threshold? Or perhaps it was a required part of the method being used to strengthen the line itself?) for the purpose of 'deflecting' the portal to Fire to a different point in the Material. Lines of power between the planes apparently interact in some fashion, with this mutual influence determining the paths they take, and the strength of the lines involved is a factor in this.

What we do not know is who is responsible, or what they are doing with the portal at its new location. We do know where that place can be found, but we've been advised (and wisely, I suspect) that simply going there would be foolish in the extreme. Whoever is responsible (presumably one of the Nineteen) will have defenses and preparations there, and may even be personally present. Our immediate plan is to instead strike at the portal from the Lower Planes to Celestia. Not only will this remove the threat to Celestia, but if the source of the added power in that line is removed, the gate to Fire will return to its original location.

Whoever did this may have enlisted the aid of demons or devils in the process, 'gifting' them with the resulting portal to the Upper Planes, for which they would have their own uses...even if the originator of the plan has no particular interest in that portion of events, so long as the gate stays open and continues to serve its purpose. Alternately, it may be a two-pronged plan with both halves being important in some way. We know that Gruumsh has been part of at least one raid into the Upper Planes (because we were summoned to help fight him, some time ago), but that does not necessarily mean he is involved in the shuffling of the gates themselves.

  • Which of the New Gods have allied with residents of the Wheel?
Gruumsh seems to be attempting to establish himself as a power in the Lower Planes, perhaps as a new lord in the Abyss.
The State of the World
The Forsaking
  • Who were the magi that were seen in visions, performing the ritual at the tower?
  • What were they attempting to accomplish? Were they successful?
They were attempting to gain the ability to cast arcane magic spontaneously, similar to how the priests of the Nineteen once cast divine magic. They were successful in that their ritual resulted in the birth of sorcery.
  • Was the change in magic a deliberate result, an accident, or a side-effect? What about the portal?
Their intent was a change in magic - they may or may not have intended or expected this to invalidate wizardry as it had functioned up to that point and require adjustments before spells would function again. The portal appears to have been unintended and unanticipated by the wizards performing the ritual, though it was the result intended by the Nineteen, who gave them the idea for the ritual in the first place.
  • Was the failure of the magic of the clergy of the New Gods due to the gods arriving on the Material? A change in the gods themselves? A change in the clergy? A change in the world? A change in magic?
According to Cuthbert, the Nineteen were very limited in how they could grant spells to their followers on their own plane. These limitations seem to apply on the Material as well, now that the gods are present here physically. If memory is serving correctly, he said the Nineteen were only able to grant spells to followers who were in their presence, or in the possession of a talisman. We've seen at least two talismans since their arrival here. However, we currently believe that the Nineteen who are here can no longer grant spells to anyone but themselves, even with the use of a talisman...perhaps because the Nineteen are now natives of the Material?
  • If clergy do in fact regain their magic in physical proximity to their gods, what is the range of this effect?
We currently believe that this does not occur.
