CLEVEN: GUILDS & GROUPS
The Cleven Guard
Though I know next to nothing about how
they are organized or who leads them, our interactions with the officers
of the law in Cleven to date have been quite positive. Both at the gate
and while investigating crimes, they've seemed professional and
reasonable. I was, of course, inclined towards them from the start on
the basis of their patrollers' refusal to attack us unprovoked on the orders
of the possessed priestess of Ehlonna we met on the road....
I believe the City Guard report up to Este Taigor,
the chief magistrate. The Royal Guard, on the other hand, report to
Meer Dickicht.
Silver Tower
Before the Forsaking, the Silver Tower
seems to have been the Guild of Mages for Cleven. With the collapse of
so many other cities, the influx of adventurers, and the spike in demand
for enchanted goods, they've instead become (as Karl put it) 'the guild
for people with money'. Having control over most of the enchanting in the
city sends enormous amounts of money through their hands (there being few
other things on which adventurers more like to spent their gathered wealth),
and put them square at the center of the economy. Now most of the adventurers
in the city are members, as are most of the merchants who sell to those
adventurers. In theory, membership earns one discounted prices; in practice,
with so many people members, it would be as correct to say that non-members
pay a penalty.
The Tower also acts as a clearinghouse for requests...and, I suppose, Quests. If one has a problem that could be solved by inquisitive people with well-used weapons, the guild is the place to go. Silver Circle
With the Silver Tower's doors opened to
non-mages, naturally the magicians needed a new group to server the purpose
it formerly had - exchange of knowledge regarding arcane magic, isolation
from the less educated, etc. The Silver Circle, then, is the actual
mage's guild at the heart of what used to be a mage's guild. From
what Jeremian has said, they maintain quite an impressive library, though
full and permanent access to it comes at a steep price - the donation of
a Blessed Book to the Circle
Braden
I am still unclear on precisely what
Braden's place is in the hierarchy of the Silver Tower and the Silver
Circle, but he has some level of authority, at least. When we interviewed
for membership in the guild and surprised the lower-level functionary who
had been recording our information, it was Braden we were referred to.
It's not clear whether that would have been the case if our surprise had
not involved divine magic; gods and divine magic are, apparently, a
subject of academic speciality for him.
{ADD DETAIL HERE - conversation about the gods, why we told him things.} Celadrin
An old acquaintance (classmate? fellow
apprentice?) of Jeremian's; a wizard and a member of the Silver Circle.

Noble Families
There have traditionally been four high noble families in Cleven;
each has a blood tie to the royal family and can be distinguished
by the use of oak symbols in their coats of arms. Each of the four
noble families has responsibility for a quadrant of the territory
around the city, and authority over the lesser nobility whose lands
lie in that area.
House Dickicht
The Dickicht family once held one of the
four quadrants around the city, and were additionally known for the high
level of military training among their family and retainers. The Dickicht
house guard formed the elite cadre within the city military. At some point
after the Forsaking, seeing that the city was under considerable
threat from various quarters, the Dickicht chose to give up their land
entirely and take responsibility for the Royal Guard and the city's military
defense.
House Maple
House Ashengaff
House Oakskeel
House Oakskeel was formerly a family of
minor nobility, owing service to the Dickichts. When the Dickicht family
surrendered their place as lords of one of the four quadrants, the Oakskeels
were selected to take over the land they had previously been responsible for.
In addition to inheriting that responsibility, the Dickichts chose to give
their estates outside of the city to the Oakskeels as well. Unsurprisingly
the Oakskeels continue to regard the Dickichts with loyalty and respect.
House Firkin
The quadrant held by House Firkin consists
largely of the Sylvan Wall. As such, they have little agriculture, but
instead take responsibility for watching over the section of the forest
that sits near the city...both for the good of those who work there, hunting
or harvesting lumber, and to guard against dangers from within the woods.
Crispen Family
A minor noble family, but quite wealthy
all the same, the Crispens had difficulties with their crypts which moved
them to eventually place a request for help with the Silver Tower Guild.
The culprit ultimately proved to be a member of their family long believed
lost, who had the misfortune to have become a vampire.
Worthing Family
A minor noble family, one of their number
(Marla Worthing) serves as the Prince's overseer and financial advisor.
I don't know which high noble family the Worthings owe service to.
