Family Crypt Desecrations
"Something
is desecrating our family graves. We need those willing to
investigate to respond. Reward offered for information or
resolution. Contact Lanier Crispen at The Retreat on Amethyst
Lane."
Someone (or ones) have been breaking into the Crispen family graves - both the regular graves in the cemetary, and the caskets in their (respectably large) crypt. They strike once every few nights. Valuables have been left behind in many cases, and it is unclear what if anything is being taken. Even more oddly, when investigating the crypt, Amber found a footprint... on the ceiling. As we've already heard stories about vampires in the city, this put us thinking along those lines, though there was nothing to rule out a magician with a Spider Climb spell. Our first night standing guard in the crypt was nearly quite a mess, as we encountered another group of adventurers in pursuit of the same goal. Fortunately, we managed to avoid any bloody misunderstandings. Our second night of watch,
however, went rather differently...we surprised the thief.
Unfortunately, he came into the crypt more promptly than I'd have
expected, and there wasn't time to wake everyone to get ready. The
vampire (if the pale face and red eyes had not been enough, he
also turned into a bat) was able to elude us and escape, but not
before some of us got a good look at him. A tour through the
Crispen portrait gallery identified him in short order - a cousin
who went missing a handful of months ago. Some effort had been put
into finding him, but it proved unsuccessful. His present
condition offers at least a partial explanation. They paid us for
our efforts and the information, and expressed a desire for their
relative to either be restored to life or permanently put to rest.
If we can contrive a plan for either, we will likely undertake it.
Farm Village - Plant Creatures
"Walking
plants attacking the Nolan farm on the east side of the city.
Adventurers needed, contact Sergeant Berthand at the south gate
for details."
We'd originally considered this situation to be something that could be handled by someone earlier in their career than we are...and apparently we were half right. A party of less experienced adventurers did go to the village and fight off the animate plants. They tracked them back to their source, which was described to us as a 'colossal tree', and judged it beyond them. We've been asked by one of the Silver Tower officials if we'd be willing to follow up on the situation, and we've agreed. We journeyed to the Nolan
farm and met Rella, the ranger from the previous group of
adventurers, who had elected to remain behind to guard the farm
until other help arrived. As she'd also been the one who located
the tree, she was easily able to guide us there. The confrontation
was ugly, brutal, and blessedly brief; the tree was just as large
as had been reported, and was able to snatch us up with its
vine-tentacles with depressing ease. Fortunately, it expired
before actually swallowing anyone. Jeremian and Kalem's constant
barage of spells were certainly helpful in bringing it low...it
was very resilient. The farmers were grateful, and I tried to give
Rella the credit I think she deserved for having stayed to help.
It would have been easy to just leave once it was clear that the
glory was going to go to someone else, but that would have left
the farmers on their own. Extra-Planar Shopping
"Requirement:
rare components from off plane. Contact Zifban at the Silver
Circle for details."
Apparently, this Zifban had quite a list of ingredients he wished to acquire; naturally, all of those that were simple or safe to locate have long since been procured. What remains are the intact body of an Inevitable, and something (I was laughing at the first request and failed to write it down) from a Formian colony...a live egg, perhaps? We'll keep our eyes open, of course, but I'm dubious we'll encounter either. Prison Break
"Revenge?
Hate demons? Here's your chance to get some back. Contact Garn at
the Knight and the Rook for more information. I'll cover necessary
supplies."
Though we haven't spoken to Garn as yet, others were able to tell us a little of the situation: during an expedition to Carceri, Garn's companions were captured and imprisoned. He is seeking reinforcements to go and free them. A worthy goal, but I'm left with the (new, but rapidly becoming familiar) feeling that perhaps this needs to be handled by those more formidable than we are. It's valuable to have a reminder that as far as we've progressed, there are still people and situations that exceed our abilities. While I don't know for certain that this is one of them, I do strongly suspect it. Surprise Vacation
"Help!
Our friend Brevalen has been transported to another plane. We need
to find him quickly. Please contact Jaylora at the Silver Tower."
'Another plane' in this case being Pandemonium. Jeremian is less than sanguine about the prospect of visiting that plane, and while I feel for the poor fellow who is lost there, we'd help no one by leaping in unprepared. If the situation is still unresolved when we've dealt with what's currently facing us, perhaps we can determine whether it would be suicidal for us to attempt it. Djinni Summoning
"Protection
required for noble djinni summoning. Additional fee granted if
intervention required. Contact Keoke at the Silver Circle for
details."
I haven't decided how I ought to feel about this. Djinni are creatures of Air, and I dislike the thought of one summoned and bound for any length of time; both because being bound against one's will is distasteful in general, and because it is especially antithetical to Air. The brief service of a summoning spell seems acceptable, as incovenient as we've seen it to be, but the idea of being Called and trapped in a circle is...very unwelcome. On the other hand, noble Djinni have the power to grant wishes to those who capture them, and as far as I know, this is the only time they possess that power. That suggests that in some ways, being called in such ways is part of the Djinni's own nature. They might even regard it as a sort of challenge, a tradition. I should think on this some more. The Undercity - Vampires
This inscripciyn serues as cenotaph for eight braue seruants of the gods.
They y-fared fvl deep into the earth, to pvtte to reste the Vn-dead that gaf vs griefe. There they died; O woe! Their boddies y-rose and slew a fvl score and mor of ovre folk, ere they fovnde finall reste. We shall no more sende! Pelor, with uertv of his synne, serues as locke and seal 'gainst deathly dark. Only one who focvseth the halwed will of the gods may ope this doore now. May the gods standan strong with ye, so that path ye chese. Aveaya, a bardic friend of Celadrin, who is in turn an old friend of Jeremian's, found this inscription on the door of a sealed crypt deep beneath Cleven. The sewers of Cleven they call the 'Old City', as they're at least partially formed of the ruins of a previous settlement on the same site...but this place was both older and deeper. In her notes, she referred to it as the Deep City. Unfortunately, we can no longer ask her about it. Her explorations were interupted by vampires. She fled back to the surface, and was killed (assassinated, truthfully) by a vampire. It's impossible to say at this point whether the vampire who killed her was one of those she fled, but the level of vampiric activity in this city is well past the line into 'disturbing'. I'm inclined to investigate on general principles, but we will need to give careful thought (once we know more) to the question of whether this sealed crypt should perhaps be LEFT sealed. Whatever rests there is likely something I would prefer to see put to a final rest, but we must consider the possibility that we might fare no better than the ancient servants of Pelor did. The Lance of Dragon's Bane
On
this sixth day of the sizth month in the fifth year of the reign
of Rodi the First, we do hereby committ the Lance of Dragon's Bane
to the Heart of the Stone Forest. May it slumber there unneeded as
our skies remain clear of dragon wings.
When the Lance was last borne, it did slay the great Green Wyrm of the Woodlands, a vile and evil monster that did trouble our Lady's domain. It was Sir Johry the righteous whose hand guided the Lands in this action. He has gone to his rest four score and nine years past, while the Lance has rested in this hall with honor. Peace has found us and in its name, we lay to rest this instrument of war. Its memory will remain forever honored in our hall and hearts. This I do record, in the name of Ehlonna, Protector of the Woodlands. The above was from a document I had of Brigga. I'm not clear any more on precisely where it came from; a lost shrine of Ehlonna in the Old City, perhaps? In any event, it had been forgotten by the Church of Ehlonna - at least briefly. Hrag-Leshak sent us to get the document from her; we gave him the original and kept a copy. I don't know what Hrag-Leshak's intent was in our recovering the proclamation...he might have merely wanted to deny knowledge of the location of the Lance to the enemies of the dragons. He gave no instructions in either direction with regards to recovering the Lance, but I think it is a goal we should strongly consider. Not only would it keep it out of the hands of enemies, but it would make a lovely gift to an up and coming half-Gold or half-Brass Priest of Fire. I inquired of Air via Communion whether the Heart of the Stone Forest was located beneath the 'Old City' under Cleven, and was told Yes.... The Stone Forest, it develops, is located below the
Old City and above the older 'Deep' city. Following the advice in Aveaya's
journal, we found our way down into the Old City and then, travelling
in the flow of an underground river, down into the Deep City. From there,
we had to ascend through a hole in the cavern ceiling to enter the Stone
Forest itself. The Stone Forest is a natural - or at least natural-appearing -
cave system that overlaps in some way with the Elemental Plane of Earth.
Many creatures of that plane dwell within, and over time, it seems that more
find their way there. The 'Heart' of the Stone Forest was a shrine to Ehlonna,
located in a central cavern...and concealed in the Ethereal. And, moreover,
still watched over by a constructed guardian. Regardless, we did manage to
obtain the Lance. Despite the wishes of the weapon to the contrary, Amber
delivered it to her High Priest butt- rather than blade-first. There was an easier route, once - there seems to be a passageway, long-since collapsed, from the Temple of Ehlonna itself. When the priests of Earth arrive, perhaps they can quiet or tame the vortex in the Stone Forest; there remains the danger that some predator capable of threatening the city above could come through there. The Fortune Teller
Future
stretches past simple sight for eye.
Fate tied fingers strangling tight in weave. Simple people with grace's light wait strong. Memory through past shadow path trails long. You spread wings to become nature wrath in sky. Shadows are substance of the lath you cleave. Hands blurred from ahead and aft inform not deceive. Airy stone in flaming flood perform sacred song. Time reveals truths no longer conform but untie. There was a fortune-teller who briefly set up shop in the Knight & Rook; I say briefly because she departed immediately after having Frederick throw runes for her. She read the results, wrote the poem above, gave it to us and left. It's a curious poem. Individual lines of this message seem to have meaning, or at least hint at it, some more obscurely than others. I've noticed something else odd about it as well, though. The rhyme pattern is very unusual . there are two separate rhyme schemes, one using the final word of each line and one using the ante-penultimate. The latter is very regular: AAA/BBB/CCC. The former, however, runs ABC/CAB/BCA. That's peculiar enough that it seems to be intentional. If you instead think of it as 123/312/231, and use that pattern to select a word from each line, the words indicated are: Future tied with past you are blurred in time. This could, of course, be a coincidence. Though given what we now know of our tangled timeline,
it now seems very unlikely that it was. What remains a puzzle, however,
is just who the fortune-teller was.... Frederick's Dreams
This is not (so far as I know!) strictly related to Cleven, but it is
occuring while we are here, so this seems the best place to
discuss it. Frederick has had some disturbing dreams. It escapes
me right now whether this has happened to him two times or three,
but he's had recurring dreams about being the captive of demons,
bound and tortured somewhere in the lower planes. I've been unable
to offer him any good advice or comfort, and I feel I've failed as
a priest in this. I did suggest to him that he inquire of Fire
directly, which I hope he'll attempt. We have considered the
possibility that the dreams are sendings from an enemy, trying to
disable him (or even possess him), though we've been able to find
no particular evidence of that. It has only occurred to me now as
I am writing this that we've entirely ignored the possibility of
them being sendings or echoes from a friend, one who is in
just the state that Frederick imagines and is in need of rescue. I
must remember to have Frederick describe the images to us more
closely, and see if they correspond to any particular lower plane
we're aware of. Of course, we have to also consider the
possibility that his dreams come from an inward source - the past
few years have been trying at times, and Frederick in particular
may have a troubled conscience.
While communing with Air, I
asked a question about Frederick's dreams, and Air declined to
answer. I asked if I'd phrased the question badly, and was told
'no'. I'm concluding from this that Air doesn't know the answer or
doesn't want to give it, and the former is more likely. Perhaps
Frederick should be asking his own patron.... Our Unknown Undead Opponent
